Spirus Medical

Spirus Medical is creating a revolution in endoscopy with the Endo-Ease® Endoluminal Advancement System. Their novel over-tubes for enteroscopy and colonoscopy utilize simple rotation to facilitate these procedures. A true platform technology, Spirus is developing solutions for urology and will continue to apply their unique ideas to other markets.

Colonoscopy
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer- related deaths in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates there were 149,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in 2006, resulting in 55,000 deaths. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for the detection of early-stage colorectal cancer and for the removal of pre-cancerous polyps.

In 2001 the U.S. government began to provide reimbursement under the Medicare program for screening colonoscopy for asymptomatic patients over 50 years of age. This major coverage decision greatly increased the demand for colonoscopy. Colonoscopy can be a demanding procedure occasionally made more complex by difficult patient anatomy.

Spirus Medical offers two products to aid the insertion and advancement of a colonoscope. The Endo-Ease Advantage® has a 50cm working length to ease your passage through the sigmoid colon while the longerEndo -Ease Vista® (70cm) helps for deeper insertion. The devices’ spiral has a natural tendency to follow the lumen of the colon as it is rotated with gentle forward pressure. Once the desired portion of colon has been traversed, it is stabilized by the Endo-Ease over-tube while the scope is independently advanced through the remainder of the colon.

The Endo-Ease Advantage and Vista are compatible with your existing pediatric colonoscopes with an outer diameter of 11.1 mm—11.6 mm. A Gentle-Lock coupler can be disengaged and re-engaged allowing you the option to advance the scope traditionally when unlocked or with rotational advancement of the Endo-Ease when locked. The over-tubes are more flexible at the distal end and gradually transition to a less flexible proximal end. This variable stiffness results in an optimal integration of torque transmission and flexibility. For your convenience and your patient’s safety, the Endo-Ease Advantage and Vista are sterilized, single use devices.

Enteroscopy:

Endo-EaseNot long ago, the small intestine was an unexplored frontier in GI endoscopy. New developments in enteroscopes have opened up this region of the GI tract but it remains a difficult organ to access. Small bowel enteroscopy is a technically challenging procedure often requiring much time.
The Endo-Ease® Endoluminal Advancement System is a significant innovation in flexible GI endoscopy. This revolutionary over-tube system enables physicians to perform flexible endoscopy procedures more efficiently.

Antegrade enteroscopic introduction with the Endo-Ease Discovery SB helps to advance compatible enteroscopes beyond to Ligament of Treitz – the fixed portion of small bowel within the abdominal cavity. Rotation of the Discovery SB beyond the Ligament of Treitz, allows a spiral to pleat the segment of the small bowel where disease is most commonly found.

The Endo-Ease Discovery SB lets you independently maneuver the enteroscope if needed while it remains in place.

The Endo-Ease Discovery SB can be paired with your existing enteroscopes measuring up to 9.4mm OD. The product is a single use device sterilized for convenience and safety.

Urology

The US market for urological devices is valued at over $1.6 billion annually. The Uro-Ease® product family currently under development will incorporate our endoluminal advancement system —a rotate to advance technology— on tools currently used to access urological lumens. Uro-Ease designs will aim to reduce patient trauma and discomfort, simplify insertion techniques for clinicians and patients in various settings.

Future Markets:

Spirus Medical developed a true platform technology with the Endoluminal Advancement System. By using a spiral on the leading end of various tubular devices, we believe diagnostic and therapeutic tools can be advanced into anatomical lumens easier and with less trauma and discomfort for the patient. Other developments are being directed at the gynecological markets such as fallopian tube access for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Many anatomical lumens are accessed by clinicians for various reasons and we are seeking out those areas that can be improved with our unique technology.
